One of the most pleasant things to do on a fall morning is to read a good book, especially if snowflakes are falling, and there is hot chocolate to be had with the book…
Today’s fall reading suggestion is The Scarlet Pimpernel, by Baroness Emmuska Orczy. It is not a particularly long book, about two hundred and fifty pages. (I know that it has a very odd-sounding name, but a pimpernel is simply a kind of flower.)
The Scarlet Pimpernel takes place during the French revolution. The story is quite good, and easy enough to follow. What I found amusing is the author’s writing style- almost off-hand and breezy. It is filled with fantastic adventures and escapes pulled off by the breadth of a hair. Perhaps it is somewhat hard to believe some of the events, but at any rate they are amusing.
