Today’s recommendation is a cookbook (go figure), An Everlasting Meal, by Tamar Adler. (Foreword by Alice Waters.)
The author wrote the book in an unusual fashion— not recipe by recipe, but in a sort of autobiographical/anecdotal manner. She talks about how good something tastes, then gives a few recipes, the most useful ones being about how to salvage burned food. Adler also quotes from one of my favorite childhood books— The Wind in the Willows. It’s a food quote, of course, and it shows that she always thought about food!
She also tries to be funny— there is a recipe for Tartar sauce, the humor of which is dubious, to say the least, but the rest of the book is very good indeed.
